The history of Milcobel

Milcobel’s roots go back more than 100 years to when dairy farmers decided to join forces to bring their products to market. This is when the first cooperatives were created. Throughout the years, small cooperatives kept growing and professionalising to strengthen their market position. Local cooperatives became regional ones, eventually merging into what has  become the main dairy cooperative in Belgium with customers around the world: Milcobel.

Today, Milcobel is an internationally renowned customer-focused and future-oriented cooperative, with quality, safety and service at its core.

At the end of the 19th century, just about every village in Belgium had its own dairy farm. These local farms started forming cooperatives to bring their products to market together. In 1900, more than 300 cooperatives already existed.

Milcobel, a Mozzarella story from Belgium

Belgium is a small country in the heart of Europe, which has been shaped by many different influences throughout its history. With a love for fashion, sports, diamonds and fine dining, Belgium is as fascinating and diverse as its foods and drinks.
Did you know …

that Belgians love fine dining?
Belgians love the Burgundian lifestyle, taking the time to enjoy a meal with family and friends while having a nice glass of wine or beer and enjoying good conversation. Undoubtedly, you’ve heard about our divine chocolate, our Belgian waffles, our French fries and our beer, but did you know that we also make more than 300 different cheeses?

that Belgium has more than 1500 types of beers?
There are about 1,500 Belgian beers to try out. Belgians have had a nose for great beers since the Middle Ages and Belgium is still known today for its exceptional specialties and thriving beer culture. Abbey beers, Trappist beers, fruit beers, amber, red or brown ales – the choices seem endless. And with beer also comes beer flavoured cheese as a specialty.

that Belgium is a cultural gem?
With a longstanding history that dates back to the Roman Empire, Belgium has many beautiful cities and ancient castles that remain a testimony of the important cultural and economic role the country has always played and is still playing today.

that Belgium has the second largest port in Europe?
Antwerp has more to offer than diamonds alone: the Port is our gateway to the world. The Port of Antwerp is Europe’s second-largest port after Rotterdam and the 13th biggest in the world. Did you know that the port covers an area of 24,000 football pitches?

that Belgium has a diamond capital?
Belgium’s second largest city, Antwerp, is the diamond capital of the world. More than half of the diamonds sold around the world pass through this sparkling city.
