The history of Milcobel
Milcobel’s roots go back more than 100 years to when dairy farmers decided to join forces to bring their products to market. This is when the first cooperatives were created. Throughout the years, small cooperatives kept growing and professionalising to strengthen their market position. Local cooperatives became regional ones, eventually merging into what has become the main dairy cooperative in Belgium with customers around the world: Milcobel.
Today, Milcobel is an internationally renowned customer-focused and future-oriented cooperative, with quality, safety and service at its core.
The first cooperatives
At the end of the 19th century, just about every village in Belgium had its own dairy farm. These local farms started forming cooperatives to bring their products to market together. In 1900, more than 300 cooperatives already existed.
The sixties were booming years for local cheese production. Our Belgian cooperatives established fame as cheese specialists for the consumer market. This is also the period of the first cheddar production for the professional food market. Export kicks off, and our products are internationally awarded.
